- Home Page |Surname List |Index of Individuals |InterneTree | Sources David Rusk (b. Abt. 1820, d. September 01, 1877) David Rusk (son of John Rusk and Mary Sterritt) was born Abt. 1820 in SC, and died September 01, 1877 in Orange Co., TX. He married Elizabeth Reid on January 26, 1843, daughter of John Reid. Notes for David Rusk: Various sources show David Rusk's birth date to be 1807, 1814, and 1817. The 1860 Census lists him as being 48, which would make his date of birth about 1811. "The Heroes of San Jacinto" shows that David was Sheriff of Nacogdoches county from 1840 to 1846. Yet another source, "Towering Texan" by Cleburne Huston puts him at "barely 20" when he became sheriff. If these sources are correct, David would have been born in 1820, not 1811. According to Lois Foster Blount in "The Southwestern Historical Quarterly, "Vol. XXXIV, No. 3, January 1931, page 191, David Rusk was "a tall youth of nineteen..." in 1836. This would made the date of his birth Abt 1817. The following is from "The Heroes of San Jacinto": "Rusk, David. Brother to Thomas J. Rusk; emigrated to Texas in January 1836. Service Record No. 1233 discloses that Mr. Rusk served in Captain Hayden Arnold's company from April 6 to June 6, 1836. He re-enlisted May 8 in Captain Arnold's company. He was sheriff of Nacogdoches county, 1840--46. He married Miss Elizabeth Reid at Nacogdoches, January 26, 1843. Mr. Rusk was a member of the Texas Veterans Association; died in Orange county, September 11, 1877." There is a bit confusion regarding the period David served as Sheriff of Nacogdoches. According to family lore and verified by "The Bicentennial commemorative History of Nacogdoches, "published by the Nacogdoches Jaycees in 1976, David served as sheriff from 1836 to May, 1847. My grandfather, William Henry Rusk, frequently related to seeing him ride up on his horse and appearing as a "giant." Following is a quote from Ms. Bobi Rusk, widow of James Cullen Rusk (b. 4/21/1935, d. 8/19/1999), a descendant of David):"... I have seen and held the muslin shirt and pants that belonged to David Rusk, and if you have heard or read that he was a large man, believe it. I am 5'10" and I could hold his shirt at my eye level and it drug the ground. I can remember my husband's dad, whom we called Keith, saying that David was uncomfortable with his height of 8' and always told anyone asking, that he was 7'12"." David married Elizabeth Reid on 1/26/1843. Elizabeth was born in 1822 and died 12/16/1908. They had ten children: John, Mary Jane, Elizabeth Ann, Ophelia, David Franklin, Charles H., Harriet T., Martha H., Nicholas and William H. Notes on death of David Rusk: "(Thomas J.) Rusk was survived by his five children and his brother, David. The latter died in 1908." Mary Whatley Clarke "Thomas J. Rusk, Soldier-Statesman-Jurist", (Jenkins Publishing Company, The Pemberton Press, Austin and New York, 1971) pp 209The following is from a biography of David Rusk on San Jacinto Museum's web site at http://www.sanjacinto-museum.org/kemp/v709.html:"RUSK, DAVID -- Born in South Carolina in 1814, a son of John and Mary (Sterritt) Rusk, and brother of General Thomas J.
